Angelica

Angelica archangelica

Family: Apiaceae (Carrot family)

Orishas: Archangel Michael, Chango

Element: Fire

Angelica has been associated with magick for more than a thousand years. It is called angelica becasue, as legend has it, a monk dreamt of an angel who told him that this member of the carrot family could be used to treat the plague.

Medicinal Uses: Angelica has long been used to treat respiratory ailments due to its ability to relax the windpipe. It also relaxes the intestines which is why angelica is used as a digestive aid. This robust perennial exhibits anti-inflammatory effects so it is used in the treatment of arthritis. It also stimulates circulation and is antibacterial and antifungal. Mildly diuretic, angelica has been used to treat UTI's.

Spiritual Uses: First and foremost, angelica is wonderful for getting rid of unwanted, negative energy or spirits. It also is used for protection against evil and is a common ingredient in house blessing preparations. When a person suffers from a longterm illness, this herb can be used to clear the air for both the inside of the body and in the surrounding environment.

Angelica root lends itself very well to burning and the smoke is a powerful incense. It's distinctive flavor has been used in candies, liquour flavorings and the stems can be eaten raw. Because of its resemblence to some poisonous members of the same family, it is not recommended to try and collect angelica from the wild.
